Tirbhuvan University Library 24 hours open a day. The library has been brought into operation 24 hours to make the students comfortable in reading culture.
Sagarraj Subedi, acting head of the library, informed that the three study rooms of the Tirbhuvan University Library 24 hours open a day, seven days a week for the convenience of the readers. According to him, at the request of the Independent Students’ Union (SWAVIU), the University has brought the study room of the library into operation 24 hours a day. Earlier, the study room of the library used to open from 5 am to 7 pm.
“For students who don’t have time during the day, we have opened the study room of the library throughout the night,” said Subedi, “a group of students come at night.”
According to Library Officer Vijay Sharma, researchers, people who work during the day and study at night come to read at night. “During the night, 15 to 20 people come every day,” he said.
Sharma informed that anyone who subscribed to the library can come and read at night. “You can become a member of the library for one year for one thousand rupees, and for six months for six hundred rupees,” he said.
Library officer Sharma said that the students who study at night usually come to study with concentration and do not have a study environment at home. “After eating, the students are studying continuously in the study room,” he said, “now most of them are students around.”
According to Sharma, there are problems such as city light, bus and lunch canteen for the students who study at night. He said that the opening hours of the main building of the library have also been extended.
Stating that those who subscribe to the library can study from 5 am to 7 pm, Sharma said that previously the library in the main building was operating only from 10 am to 5 pm.
Swaviyu Secretary Siddhant Bhatt said that keeping in mind the students, the opening hours of the library have been extended. “We have taken the initiative to open the library 24 hours with the aim of developing the culture of reading among university students,” he said.
Bhatt said that even if the Tirbhuvan University Library 24 hours open, there is a problem of late night tea and snacks for the students due to lack of canteen. According to him, now there are 440,000 national and international books in the library.
Anyone who has become a member of the library will be able to take the books home and read them online as well. More than seven hundred students come to study here daily.
According to Subedi, acting head of the library, the library will move to a new building from next month. He informed that the library will be moved to a four-and-a-half-story state-of-the-art building that is handicap-friendly. According to him, two thousand students can study at the same time in the new building.
